Ten Topics in Rheumatology : Next meeting

Professor David Isenberg is Head of the Lupus Clinic in University College Hospital, London and has had extensive experience in the use of Rituximab and similar monoclonals in severe lupus.

Dr David Jayne is a Consultant Nephrologist at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, and has an international reputation in the field of vasculitis.

Dr David D’Cruz is Head of Clinical Research in the Lupus Unit at St Thomas’ Hospital, Dr D’Cruz has published extensively on lupus and vasculitis.

Professor Pierre Miossec, Head of Rheumatology in Lyon, is an international authority on mechanisms of inflammation, especially in RA.

Dr Munther Khamashta is Head of Laboratory Research in the St Thomas’ Hospital Lupus Unit and is a world authority on pregnancy in lupus.

Professor Robert Fox from the University of San Diego, South California, is one of the world authorities on Sjogren’s syndrome.

Professor Robert Moots. Professor of Rheumatology in Liverpool, Robert Moots has conducted nationwide studies on myositis.

Professor Christopher Denton runs a national scleroderma referral centre and research unit at the Royal Free Hospital, London.

Dr Rachel Davies, Honorary Consultant in the St Thomas’ Hospital Lupus Unit, has completed a major study of risk factors in accelerated arterial disease in lupus and Hughes syndrome.

Dr Shirish Sangle from St Thomas’ Hospital Lupus Unit, has published widely on his clinical observations in Hughes syndrome, including papers on renal and mesenteric artery stenosis and idiopathic bone fracture.

Dr George Carr-White. Consultant Radiologist in St Thomas’ Hospital, Dr Carr-White has developed a special interest in cardiac imaging in lupus and related diseases.

Dr Ian Bruce, whilst in Toronto, carried out a major study into arterial risk factors, which he now continues at Manchester Royal Infirmary.

Professor Graham Hughes. Emeritus Professor of Medicine at Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospital, Professor Hughes has published widely in lupus, and in 1983 first described the antiphospholipid (Hughes) syndrome.

Dr Ros Eeles. Consultant Physician at the Royal Marsden Hospital (Dr Eeles is one of the team making major advances in the genetics of cancer – lessons which may have implications for rheumatology.)

Dr Fiona Godlee qualified in 1985 as a General Physician, and became the first woman editor of the BMJ since the journal was founded in 1840.

Dr Maria Cuadrado is Consultant Physician in the St Thomas’ Hospital Lupus Unit. She has published both on clinical as well as basic (tissue factor) aspects of Hughes syndrome.

Dr Leila Khamasha-Ledezma. Increasingly physicians treating connective tissue diseases are faced with decisions regarding surgery and dentistry in patients on warfarin. Dr Leila Khamashta-Ledezma, a dentist specialising in orthodontics, will provide guidelines.

Dr Laura Bertolaccini works in the laboratories at St Thomas’ Hospital and has published extensively on assays for anti-ß2, anti-prothrombin and other antibodies of significance in vascular disease.

Professor Elias Toubi is Professor of Medicine in Haifa, Israel. His research work centres on inflammatory mechanisms in arthritis.

Dr Beverley Hunt. A Consultant Haematologist at St Thomas’ Hospital, Dr Hunt is a leading expert on coagulation and will review the newer anticoagulants.

Prof Guillermo Ruiz-Irastorza, Professor of Medicine in Vittoria, Spain, has published extensively on connective tissue diseases, and will be delivering the Josep Font Memorial Lecture.

Dr Christopher Edwards is Consultant Rheumatologist at Southampton University Hospital. He has a national and international reputation for his work on anti-TNF agents in rheumatoid arthritis.

Each year, “Ten Topics” welcomes a speaker not directly involved in rheumatology – or even medicine.  Previous Guest Speakers include Lord Winston, Professor Bevra Hahn, Dr R Johnson.

This year’s Guest Speaker is Lord Archer – a Member of Parliament, television pundit, charity worker and author of many blockbuster novels, including “Kane and Abel”, “Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less”, and, more recently, “Prison Diaries”.
